Google believes the key to beating ChatGPT is to drop its all-conquering gaming AI into the algorithm-

Google plans to integrate techniques from an AI system built to win games of the complex board game, Go, in order to bulk out its next-gen large language model and rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The new large language model (LLM), known as Gemini, will tap into the game-winning AI system to leverage its skills in reinforcement learning. This is expected to offer improvements in tasks that current LLMs, like ChatGPT or Google’s Bard, may struggle with or open up new opportunities for its use.

“At a high level you can think of Gemini as combining some of the strengths of AlphaGo-type systems with the amazing language capabilities of the large models,” Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, says in a story from Wired.

Since April this year, DeepMind has been merged with G…

Here’s space corporations doing things they shouldn’t in the Aliens- Dark Descent story trailer-

Aliens: Dark Descent has released a story trailer with a couple minutes of teasing as to what we’re going to be getting up to on our squad-based RTS adventures on the planet Lethe. I bet it’s a nice vacation and everyone’s going home happy.

Spoilers: It’s not. Your squads of hard-bitten colonial marines look like they’re deploying into the classic horde of Alien monsters, corporate goons, and horrible mutant cyborg experiments the Alien franchise is known for. Except for that last part, the cyborgs. I think that’s the new bit in this game. I’d bet my last dollar they’re the work of some irresponsible androids and/or corporate experimenters,

“The nightmare begins when the Otago spacecraft crash lands on Planet Lethe after a Xenomorph escaped containment and caused the activat…

Counter-Strike 2 comes with Half-Life- Alyx’s most needlessly impressive graphics quirk-

It looks like Counter-Strike 2 comes with one of our favourite graphical quirks from Half-Life: Alyx, namely extraordinarily realistic liquids in bottles.

We’ve spoken before about our love of realistic liquids in Half-Life: Alyx. The feature was patched in after the game’s release and immediately became a fan favourite. I remember thinking at the time that it’s the most realistically sloshy bottle I’ve ever laid my mortal eyes on. In a game, that is.

In Alyx, it was all made possible by a shader that cleverly makes a bottle appear as though it’s both translucent and filled with liquid, but the back-end of the engine isn’t actually running any sort of liquid simulation to do it. Clever stuff. That was intended to take some of the performance hit you might expect out of somet…

Konami’s latest Metal Gear Solid masterstroke is releasing a patch to fix MGS1’s worst bug that doesn’t fix it at all (Update- It works now)-

Update 15/03/2024: Two days after releasing patch 1.5.0, the Steam Input settings for MGS 1 have now been updated to enable the fix to actually work.

The Metal Gear Solid Master Collection released in a bit of a state. Sure, Konami never promised anything other than straight ports of a bunch of Metal Gear games, but the versions of those games that hit PC and modern consoles last October were tangibly worse than their original versions. They were rife with muddy textures, audio glitches, and—in the case of MGS 1—bad analogue controls.

More accurately, they weren’t really analogue at all. Instead, the MGS 1 Master Collection version simply mapped eight-way D-pad controls onto the left stick, instead of allowing full 360-degree m…

Nvidia shows no sign of slowing down as it rakes in more than $26 billion in a single quarter thanks to data center demand-

Nvidia is the darling of Wall Street as it announced its latest quarterly financial results. In short, the company is a money printing machine, beating analyst’s estimates. Its reported revenues were even higher than those from its stellar Q3 2024 earnings report.

According to its press release, Nvidia generated $26 billion in revenue over the first quarter of 2024, up 18% from the previous quarter and a massive 262% increase from a year ago. As expected, the big bucks came from its data center business and surging AI demand, which made up $22.6 billion of the overall $26 billion in revenue. That’s an increase of 23% over the previous quarter and a hard-to-believe 427% increase from a year ago.

These results saw the shares of Nvidia hit over $1,000 in after-hours tradi…

Steam had 10M people playing at the same time this week-

Steam has been on a roll over the past couple of years. This time last year the platform reached 28 million concurrent users, an increase of three million over the year before. Over this past weekend, SteamDB recorded that number rocketing up to a new peak of 33,078,963 players all logged into Steam at the same time.

A four million concurrent user increase over 12 months is some damn good growth, and it’s not the only record that Valve’s platform smashed over the weekend. While the 33 million concurrent users is just for the number of players logged into Steam, Eurogamer reports that there were also 10,284,586 people actively playing something on January 8. It’s the first time the platform has surpassed 10 million concurrent active users.

Regulars like CS:GO, Apex Legends, D…
